The Branford Hornets are going strong this winter season, accumulating many wins across the board.
BasketballBoys Varsity Basketball has had a respectable season, with a 7-11 record so far this season; the team currently has two games remaining in their season. Additionally, they need one more win to make it into the playoffs.
“I enjoy being on the team, everyone works well together, and pushes each other to be their best,” JV player Matt Polemeni said to The Buzz. “In particular, Shilo Williams is a great role model… He always shows up and works as hard as he can.”
Girls Varsity Basketball is currently 4-11; they had a game against Hillhouse High School of New Haven on Feb 17, which they lost 25 – 41, marking their final game of the regular season.
SwimBoys Swim is headed to Notre Dame on the 19th. They hope to finish with 8 wins, 2 losses at the end of this season. On the girls team, some commendable performers include sophomore Audrey Henkel scoring 543 points for the team as wells as Audrina Pham, scoring an additional 427 points.
DanceThe Varsity Dance Team has qualified for states and SCCs; they had a matchup against Hillhouse High School on Feb 17 and are set to go to NDA National Competition, qualifying in the Small Varsity Hip-Hop Finals and Small Varsity Jazz Semifinals.
WrestingVarsity Wrestling had a meet against Foran High School of Milford, which they took a loss at. SCC Championships proved better, however, with the team scoring seventh of 17 teams in the conference. The Class M championships are set to be held next weekend.
Ice HockeyBoys Varsity Ice Hockey is currently 7-8-2. They won their game against Daniel Hand High School 6-1 on Monday; their next game will be home against Jonathan Law High School at the Bennett Rink in West Haven.
Track and FieldBoth Varsity Girls and Boys Track had their final meet on February 13, competing at the Class M State Championship. Commendable performances included junior Nick Marciano’s 40′ 7″ shot put throw, scoring in the top ten in Class M, as well as the Boys 1600m Sprint Medley Relay team, which qualified by a tenth of a second at the Last Chance Meet before states.
With the winter season winding down, spring is quietly calling as athletes look forward to the warmer season ahead.
